Doug is a predominantly self taught landscape artist. A 30 years career in the Royal Marines, with frequent moves and deployments, was not entirely conducive to developing his painting technique. However, since retiring in 2020 he has embarked on numerous courses with a variety of professional artists to refine his passion for capturing landscapes, both painting outdoors and in the studio. 

 

He paints in oils, watercolour and acrylic, largely of subjects around the South West of England where he has spent the majority of his free time. Currently settled in Woodbury, Devon, the surrounding countryside provides a myriad of material to draw on; much of his work involves coastal or water based scenes.

 

In the early days working as a Retained Firefighter afforded good opportunities to paint in the studio. More recently however reducing this commitment has enabled more time to benefit from outdoor painting practising ‘En Plein Air’ work.
